And the winner goes to... Best Opera Orchestra!

We’re thrilled to be among six world-class opera orchestras nominated “Best Opera Orchestra,” by the International Opera Awards. We are alongside Bayerisches Staatsorchester, Bayreuth Festival, Deutsche Oper, MusicAeterna, and Teatro alla Scala. While opera companies have been nominated and awarded every year since the first awards, the “Best Opera Orchestra” award has been given only once before — to The Metropolitan Opera Orchestra in 2013. It’s very fitting, and we’re very proud, that Lyric Opera of Chicago is also being honored — in the category of “Best Opera Company.” The winners will be announced Monday, April 9th, at an awards ceremony at the London Coliseum sponsored by Mazars, where the dress code is “glamorous.” Opera lover and philanthropist Harry Hyman* and OperaMagazine editor John Allison founded these awards in 2012, inspired to raise the profile of opera as an art form, recognize and reward success in opera, and raise money for opera talent — established and emerging — around the world. The general public globally can nominate candidates for the twenty different awards, and a jury of opera experts (http://www.operaawards.org/2018-jury/), led by John Allison, selects the shortlist of nominees from the thousands submitted. And they will select award recipients. The Awards raise money for the Opera Awards Foundation, a charity that supports aspiring operatic talent worldwide. Patrons of the International Opera Awards include Sir Thomas Allen, Dame Janet Baker, Placido Domingo, Dame Anne Evans, Mirella Freni, Dame Felicity Lott, and Sir John Tomlinson.

We’re enjoying this great honor and celebrate the great opera orchestras of the world.
